What a breath of (badly needed) fresh air when someone speaks sense, speaks sanity.

Julia—you are the diplomat. I am the diplomat. We have a group of diplomats, called The Saners. We are climate activists dedicated to protecting the biosphere and ensuring that everyone’s children inherit a habitable planet. We are dedicated to promoting, no—embodying—our common humanity.

We are not (necessarily) religious, but we actually do love our “enemies”—oil profiteers and politicians and others in powerful positions who are destroying everything in a childish and foolish quest for ever more (meaningless) wealth and power. They aren’t cartoon villains, but imperfect human beings who are behaving foolishly, dooming their own children and grandchildren.

They are under the spell of the systems and situations into which they were born or fate has placed them. We must stop them—but never hat them or harm them.

The Saners has one central idea: that it is literally insane to ruin the planet you—and everyone you love—lives on.

We are developing plans (and actions) based on the nonviolent resistance principles effectively articulated by King and Gandhi (and others). We intend to actually slash fossil fuels use and put competent climate scientists in charge of a worldwide emergency program to address the crisis. They will be aided and supported by those who have the moral standing—young climate activists who understand what is happening and will bear the brunt of a collapsing climate.

This SEEMS impossible or utopian. But how did a bunch of unarmed Indians oust the British Empire? How did King and others segregate the South? It’s doable. Change—significant and unexpected change—happens all the time.
