What the author says here rings true. And there IS still mystery about people and their behavior. It’s astounding to me how much behavior is genetic. But much is cultural, too. The American culture is clearly not empathetic. And it’s never been less empathetic than it is today. Our economic system glorifies greed. Our culture praises the ultra-wealthy—even when they’ve acquired the wealth through inheritance or swindling (the 2 most common methods.)
I believe we are at our worst when we are consumed by fear and anger. And so much of our society is geared to sparking both of the dangers—in service of a small number of insecure people in powerful positions.
We need to break out of the framework, stop just responding, and take control of the conversation. We need to focus on what important—for example, the climate and the future of our species (which is looking questionable at best right now.)
I know it may be futile, but I talk truth to power—with empathy. I hope to change the minds of perhaps one of the many I contact, and have some positive visible effect on our common future. I may be too optimistic.
