Would Not-For-Profit Nuclear Reactors Prevent Climate Collapse?
Those passionate proponents of nuclear energy — how sincere are they? If they genuinely believe in it, they’d support nuclear even if all of the facilities were not-for-profit.
I’m writing this essay to create a link to a viewpoint I haven’t heard: that most nuclear proponents aren’t focused on preventing climate collapse; that they are looking to make money for themselves. Or that they are simply ideologically wedded to the current systems of greed and selfishness, the very values which powers our ongoing Sixth Extinction.
I can’t help noticing that nuclear proponents, after telling us how the new nuclear plants are safe and efficient, they go on to hammer all other alternative energy sources. I see this almost every time.
These critiques of alternative energy usually seem lazy and familiar. Like you can’t get solar energy at night and wind energy depends on…wind. (Duh!) They act as if they’ve just discovered these “issues” themselves and that they are insurmountable. In fact, those issues have already been effectively addressed, and the technology of the various alternative renewable energy sources are consistently being improved.
Solar, in particular, is an astoundingly successful technology. The actual energy source is unlimited and free — which is what…
