Years ago! I’m a web developer. It was a community website.
The object was to discuss big issues. Try to construct the strongest arguments of both sides. And yeah, you’d help your opponent strengthen his argument.
We’d apply logic—like school book logic—to the argument, improvement everybody’s ability to think.
Nobody would be expected to change his or her mind. But everyone would better understand each other’s positions.
And, if we got really good, we’d try to develop additional positions we hadn’t originally thought of.
I was thinking of the Constitutional convention. People often ask, what would the founders think? Well, they were mostly smart and disagreed (fiercely) on almost everything! And some of those who disagreed most were very good friends.
I loved that.
