Yes! OMG, this makes so much sense that it’s scary! The “happiness” that’s heralded in our society is “accomplishment” which is—as practiced—greed and selfishness. And the reward isn’t actual happiness—it’s just an adrenaline rush.
We should help other people not for the happiness, not for the gratitude, not for any external “benefit.” When we do this, we recognize in a meaningful way one of the most important realizations of life—that we are all substantially THE SAME. The experience of life is, at it’s very core, a common experience. It’s a period of very limited time, of a mysterious consciousness. And it’s bookended by two blocks of infinite non-existence.
It’s not just tragic to waste this precious time and experience WORKING FOR SOME GREEDY ASSHOLE, or engaging in cruelty, accumulating stuff or seeking praise.
Anything other than wonder, and kindness, and self-expression is kind of insane.
And, as Michael points out, the existing problems in the world are no barrier to being kind RIGHT NOW.
C’mon people. Some of you are living the right way now. But more of us can do better. I’ve ben trying for awhile now—overcoming some of my introversion—and I can testify that it’s a better way to live. It’s not that it’s “rewarding.” It’s that it FEELS RIGHT.
It definitely feels more real to buy lunch for a homeless person than to had up a company. I’ve done both.
