You did a brave and good thing! I don't know what the right strategy is: should we confront bigots or shun them or simply set an example of moral rightness?

I think maybe we should rally the good people—like yourself—to set an example of goodness. It's easy. We just be ourselves, but also directly speak about our love for all of humanity. And maybe our Earth and Nature while we are at it.
