You must judge — yes. But not with the audacious omniscience of a God. Because you, too, fall short.

We have, within our culture, a strain of thinking that allows anyone and perhaps everyone to be dismissed as unworthy of our attention. And often, condemned as well.

As a (not quite yet dead) white male, I could easily be a target. All white women could be dismissed as privileged Karens.

And anyone accused of anything can be quickly declared guilty as charged.

Everyone Is “Guilty”

Martin Luther King cheated on his wife. Gandhi was an inattentive father. In all likelihood, Harriet Tubman would have been uncomfortable with — or hostile towards — trans people.

In your own moments of anger or fear or despair, YOU can and probably have said some cruel and insensitive things. I know that I have.

What kind of ridiculous standard is it, when we discount everything a person has said and done, and cancel that person over a few or even a singular uncharacteristic statement or action? I mean, if that action was, say, killing someone — well, then yes that deserves some pretty serious condemnation.
