I released A Climate Declaration on July 14th. It was intended as a framework for a revolution by ordinary people who are determined that their children will live on a habitable Earth. The plan was (and is) for a popular nonviolent movement to oust the authorities who continue to drill for and burn fossil fuels.

We want new leadership worldwide, with people who will carry out a rapid end to oil, and a fast transition to clean energy — along with any other measures recommended by climate scientists.

Why Revise?

I was reluctant to change the document — it’s a passionate call to action, something for people to rally around. Something to drive people to work together, use the power they have, and create a better world.

Even with its weaknesses, I think it was still pretty solid. (See the original version here.) But there’s a delicate balance between inspiration and alienation. The original version alienated people who should be with us. By elevating the role of young climate activists to leadership positions, I have excluded adults and left them in a supporting role.
