Member-only story
Today I met a pair of young people who were fundraising for charity in front of one of my favorite coffee shops. I like to help, but there are so many causes and I only have so much money. Like most Americans nearing retirement, the amount of money I have is…not enough.
But I was disarmed by these fundraisers. The one who approached me had a kind of charisma. And, as it happened, she was raising funds for a charity that I had worked for myself — decades ago — a charity that I knew from within and admired. These two were part of the generation I most admire and they are the future. Or will be if the current generation doesn’t screw things up badly.
Those of you who have been reading me on Medium may have read my essay titled “Today’s Young People — Including Kids — Are the Real Greatest Generation.” Whenever I meet young people like these fundraisers, they inspire me. So I want to expand on the points I made in that previous essay here.
As pretty much everyone knows — at least those of us in the “reality-based community” — the climate has been under a lengthy attack by foolish “leaders” who continue to burn fossil fuels at record rates even though they have been warned by scientists that this would create dire problems. Those dire problems are now clear for all to see. Stopping climate destruction is my passion.
